The effectiveness of mind-mapping learning strategy to extend vocabulary knowledge among elementary students
Šnevajsová, Helena ; Mikuláš, Martin (advisor) ; Kacafírková, Petra (referee)
Knowledge of vocabulary is an essential part of linguistic competence. Many students learn English vocabulary by translation and rote memorisation of vocabulary lists, which can result in the inability to use the words in well-formed sentences and appropriate contexts. Some students may find rote memorisation monotonous. This study examines the effectiveness of using the mind-map learning strategy to extend English vocabulary. Thirty-one elementary school students (15 men and 16 women) from two different elementary schools completed a short test before vocabulary instruction to obtain baseline data. Vocabulary instruction with the use of mind maps learning strategy followed. The recall was measured at the end of the lesson and one to two weeks after vocabulary instruction. A subjective assessment of the mind map learning strategy to learn vocabulary was taken. The results show that the knowledge of vocabulary items improved compared with the baseline. Moreover, students retained similar knowledge even after one to two weeks. New information was moved to the long-term memory of the students. Students were able to recall vocabulary from a medium- term perspective. Subjective assessment of the learning strategy showed that students enjoy learning vocabulary with mind maps more than writing vocabulary...
Teaching Mathematics using the CLIL method
Vrbíková, Helena ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Kvasz, Ladislav (referee)
The thesis deals with preparation of teaching materials for teaching mathematics using the CLIL method. The chosen topic is statistics at lower secondary level. The thesis is divided into several chapters, first three chapters are more theoretically oriented and the last four chapters deal with the actual preparation and use of teaching materials for the chosen topic. The theoretical part of this theses introduces the CLIL method and several difficulties when using it, as well as suggestions for overcoming them successfully. Next, reasons for the choice of a particular topic in mathematics are given and the choice of English as the secondary language that is taught is justified. Lastly, teaching targets are set in accordance with the basic principles of this method both in mathematics and English as a second language. The specifics of the topic in question are carefully chosen while observing the current curriculum. The practical part of this theses focuses in detail on piloting the use of typically CLIL activities. The conclusions drawn from this first experiment are then used when preparing the actual materials for teaching statistics. The bachelor thesis deals with WebQuests and their use in English language teaching. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the concept of a WebQuest and describes its origin, criteria for its creation, their recommended structure, and types of WebQuests. More specifically, it also describes how WebQuests help to develop language skills in the areas of communication, reading, writing, and listening. The WebQuests are in a suitable form for teaching as they contain instructions for the students and basic instructions for the teachers along with the assessment criteria. WebQuests are created in four different software applications and all of them are in English. To check the appropriateness of the language level of these WebQuests, I cooperated with my sister, who is the age of the target group of students. The topics of the created WebQuests are based on common life situations that the students may encounter, which increases their motivation to learn. An important element of these WebQuests is the interdisciplinary overlap and the development of language and other skills that can be used in real life.
